Offensive Security Specialist | Former Cybersecurity Lead at Standard Bank & Deloitte Africa | CEH, OSCP, CISSPThabo “Cipher” Mokoena isn’t just a cybersecurity expert he’s a digital sentinel who’s spent the last 15 years defending Africa’s most critical financial, telecom, and government infrastructure from sophisticated cyber threats.
Biography
Hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, Thabo built his reputation not in classrooms, but in war rooms leading red team operations, incident response, and ethical hacking engagements for institutions where a single breach could cost millions or compromise national security.
He served as Head of Penetration Testing at Standard Bank, where he designed and executed simulated attacks on core banking systems, mobile apps, and SWIFT interfaces helping the bank achieve zero major breaches during a period of intense cyber warfare targeting African financial institutions. At Deloitte Africa, he led cybersecurity assessments for MTN, Transnet, and the South African Reserve Bank, earning a reputation for uncovering “impossible” vulnerabilities others missed.
Thabo is one of only a handful of Africans to hold all three elite certifications: Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP), and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). He’s also a contributing author to the African Cyber Resilience Framework and a regular speaker at Black Hat MEA, Africa Cyber Summit, and SANS Johannesburg.
Beyond defense, Thabo is deeply committed to building Africa’s next generation of cyber warriors. He founded Hack4Africa, a nonprofit that trains youth in ethical hacking across townships and rural communities proving that talent exists everywhere, but opportunity doesn’t.
